HP Extends Battery Recall – Check yours today

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

If you haven’t already checked to see if your laptop’s battery pack could be listed, please do so. And even if  you’ve checked your battery during our previous recall announcements, it’s important to double check since this expansion includes additional battery packs and one additional notebook model series. Just go to the program Web site – in this case, the May 26thupdate – and click the “Validate Your Battery” button.

To be extra clear: This isn’t a recall of notebook PCs, just the affected batteries. Even if your notebook is listed as part of the recall, it does not guarantee that your serial number is impacted. Those eligible will receive a replacement pack for each verified, recalled pack at no cost.

Windows XP infection rate ‘five times’ that of Windows 7

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Microsoft release the firm’s 10th Security Intelligence Report saying Java-based infections rose sharply but users of newer operating systems such as Windows 7 were much less likely to be infected than users of Windows XP.

Neowin summarised Microsoft’s data, calculating that the quarterly malware infection rate of Windows 7 was around half of the infection rate of Windows Vista service pack 2 and less than one fifth the infection rate of Windows XP.

“As in previous periods, infection rates for more recently released Microsoft operating systems and service packs are consistently lower than older ones,” Microsoft said in the report, adding that infection rates for 64-bit versions were lower still.

“One reason may be that 64-bit versions of Windows still appeal to a more technically savvy audience than their 32-bit counterparts, despite increasing sales of 64-bit Windows versions among the general computing population,” the report said.

The report also found that other 64-bit exclusive security features, such as the Kernel Patch Protection (KPP), may also contribute to the difference by preventing certain types of malware.

Whether you are using Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, it is important you keep the system clean. An infected system can and will leak personal data, which could result in identity fraud. Our Healthcheck will check for an remove any infections.

Virus Phone scam on the increase

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

The scam always starts the same way: the phone rings at someone’s home, and the caller – asks for the householder, quoting their name and address before saying “I’m calling for Microsoft (or similar). We’ve had a report from your internet service provider of serious virus problems from your computer.”

Dire forecasts are made that if the problem is not solved, the computer will become unusable.

The puzzled owner is then directed to their computer, and asked to open a program called “Windows Event Viewer”. Its contents are, to the average user, worrying: they look like a long list of errors, some labelled “critical”. “Yes, that’s it,” says the caller. “Now let me guide you through the steps to fixing it.”

The computer owner is directed to a website and told to download a program that hands over remote control of the computer, and the caller “installs” various “fixes” for the problem. And then it’s time to pay a fee: £70-200 for a “subscription” to the “preventative service”.

The only catch: there was never anything wrong with the computer, the caller is not working for Microsoft or the internet service provider, and the owner has given a complete stranger access to every piece of data on their machine.

Don’t fall for it. If you are unsure, Contact Techi.es today on 0844 500 8324 or email us to discuss.

Spring Clean

Monday, April 25th, 2011

With the long weekend almost past us and with another long weekend due in just a few days, how many of you have spent the time spring cleaning the house/office? It is always good to clean and tidy things up periodically. With the change in temperatures, winter clothes get put away and out come the summer clothes.

The sunshine gives us added motivation to get up and at them.

One thing many people forget is that Computers need much the same from time to time. Clean out the junk, remove applications no longer required, and tidy up your own files. It takes 2-3 hours to clean up the average computer.

  • Look in add/remove programs and uninstall applications which are no longer required.
  • Use applications such as ccleaner, spybot, malwarebytes to clean up redundant files and registry entries (beware these applications can remove files which you may need for system operation. If you are unsure please contact us).
  • Check your virus scanner is updating regularly and set to run a full scan at least once a week.
  • Ensure Windows Update is running automatically and install any updates which are available.
  • Check for updates to all the software you use and ensure you have the most upto date versions.
  • Check email storage, setup and overall security to ensure your emails are working properly.
  • Check file storage, setup and overall security to ensure you are not low on space

Spend the time doing this and you will speed up your computer, and ensure your computer is secure.

Now I know what many of you are thinking…. “when do I have time for this with everything else going on?”

We understand many of you are busy, so why not let us do this for you. With our powerful and secure remote access tools, we can carry out a full spring clean for you for only £24.99. Read more about our Healthcheck.
