Microsoft to announce worldwide voluntary recall for some Surface Pro power cables

surface_story

Microsoft is preparing to announce a worldwide voluntary recall affecting power cables sold with three generations of its Surface Pro tablets.

A report published by Channelnomics Europe was first to reveal the company’s plans to release a statement later this week, announcing a comprehensive replacement program for AC power cables on Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 models sold before July 2015.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley confirmed the details with a Microsoft spokesperson, who provided her with the following statement:

As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly.

The spokesperson added that a site with further details related to the recall will be available “shortly”, but did not elaborate further on exactly when that would be.

The Channelnomics report says that the Microsoft statement, a copy of which the publication has apparently seen, notes that if the cords are “sharply or repeatedly bent… [or] tightly wrapped”, they may be prone to overheating. According to that report, Microsoft planned to make the announcement regarding the voluntary recall on Friday, January 22.
